Dr. J.T. Thornton began his lifelong calling to vocational ministry in 2014 as a Student Pastor. As a 22 year-old, recently completing his undergraduate degree, J.T. was excited and motivated to equip 6th-12th grade students with the tools needed to follow Jesus. While this is the calling of a pastor and ministry leader, what he wasn’t prepared for was the shift in his personal spiritual formation in a new season of life and ministry.

About 4 months into ministry and seminary, J.T. had a major seizure. After numerous tests and doctor visits, the conclusion was that the seizure was induced by stress, sleep deprivation, dehydration, and weight gain. A few months later, while in clinical counseling, J.T. realized how close he already was to ministry burn out and that something in his life desperately needed to change.

Over the next number of years, the Lord led J.T. on a journey that not only ignited his passion and desire for an intimate relationship with Jesus, but also to a depth of ministry he never knew possible. Continually learning what it is to love God with the fullness of himself has been the single most life-changing experience that has had ripple effects in every other area of his life for the past 11+ years of ministry. From influencing his love for his family, overcoming a lifelong struggle and addiction, to preparing him for various encounters in ministry, J.T. has seen first hand how a deepening, wholistic love for God brings freedom to the believer, and to the pastor/ministry leader like nothing else can.

J.T. earned his undergraduate degree in Speech Communication with a Minor in Leadership Studies from Hardin-Simmons University in 2014. In 2016, he graduated from Logsdon Seminary with a Master of Arts in Family Ministry with an emphasis in pastoral counseling. In 2024 J.T. earned his Doctor of Ministry with a focus on communal discipleship, from George W. Truett Seminary.
